The Winds of Discovery
Christopher Columbus Family Academy
New Haven, Connecticut
To the child every moment is a vast
uncharted wilderness ready to be discovered.
To the open mind of youth, these winds might be
called curiosity, excitement, encouragement and
interest, without which any expedition might find
itself caught in the Doldrums.
It is in the spirit of the unseen, yet tangible forces
of youthful discovery that the sculptural facades
of the Christopher Columbus Academy have
been crafted. The various facades of the building
represent the cardinal directions of the winds.
The names for these winds, inscribed upon the
“compass panel” in each wall come from cultures
around the world. Like the navigational
maps of Christopher Columbus the facades the
school chart the territory of the wind through the
lens of youthful discovery—a paper airplane, a
pin wheel and a kite—which to the child are the
gateway to discovery of physics, mathematics
and design. Woven throughout the sea of discovery
are salient yet incomplete quotations by
great thinkers and dreamers which teasingly implore
further exploration through class projects
or independent discovery.
