IDMAA IDEAS: Works in Process
This exhibition catalog featured the works of the conference IDMAA 2006 conference exhibition. This catalog is a commentary on process and its material manifestation. For the title typography Works in Process, the typeface Helvetica Neue has been translated into cells for the Game of Life devised by the British mathematician John Horton Conway in 1970. Each page presents a generation of computation that destroys and creates the cells of the letterforms according to the indiscriminate logic of Conway’s creation. Flipping quickly animates these changes as the title’s visual coherence quickly erodes to reveal a fascinating display of procedural mutation. What is left on the surface of this book are but the artifacts of an extended investigation into to relationship between language, visual poetry and the mysterious world of cellular automata.

IDMAA IDEAS: Works in Proces

An typographic experiment with Conway's Game of Life using the word "art" set in Helvetica as the seed. Note: This experiment did not yeild any significant results.
