Quadromorphemes
Morphemes are by definition the rudimentary building blocks of language. They find their strength
in the early utterances of our ancestors. Stacked like bricks and cast in concrete, the letters form words which
mutely express formal relationships that bear no relationship to their spoken or written counterparts. Each
sculpture is literally a four letter word stacked end to end. This sculpture series grew out of a conversation
with Jessica Stockholder about the nature of language as an aesthetic artifact. The question was posed as to
whether Quadromorphemes were about the ‘form ’or were they about the ‘text’. This
‘TEXT’ sculpture below currently resides in the private collection of
William Drenttel and Jessica Helfand.
